Puppy and Kitten Care

Puppies and kittens need frequent veterinary visits to monitor their growth and development, and to address common problems such as parasites, minor infections, or behavior concerns. At each puppy or kitten wellness visit, we perform a complete examination and provide age-appropriate preventive care recommendations. Whether you’re a first-time pet owner or an experienced pet guru, raising a young pet can be challenging, so we’re here to support you on the journey.

Vaccines keep your pet safe from many serious diseases found in the environment or spread directly from wildlife or other pets. But, vaccines are not only for puppies or kittens—after your puppy or kitten’s initial series, they must also receive vaccine boosters every one to three years throughout their lifetime to remain protected. The Gentle Vet recommends core vaccines for all pets, including rabies and DHPP for dogs and FVRCP for cats. Additional vaccines may be recommended based on species, age, and lifestyle, and may include:

  • Canine influenza
  • Bordetella (i.e., kennel cough)
  • Leptospirosis
  • Lyme disease
  • Feline leukemia
Vaccines

All pets, including those who live exclusively indoors, are at risk for parasite infestations. Fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal parasites not only annoy your pet, but can also threaten their overall health by spreading disease and damaging tissues. Puppies and Kittens are not born with parasites but they do get them directly from the mother when they nurse. It's also important to know that these parasites are transmissible to humans. Fleas and ticks lurk nearly everywhere in wildlife-endemic areas, and heartworms are spread through pesky and pervasive mosquitoes. The Gentle Vet offers the latest parasite prevention innovations, including topical and oral products that control multiple parasites for 30 or more days per treatment. Our team can help you determine your pet’s specific parasite risk and craft a customized prevention program. Parasite Prevention

Similar to humans, pets are more likely to develop health issues as they age, so senior pets require more frequent, specialized veterinary care. The Gentle Vet recommends senior pets visit the veterinarian twice per year to help catch health problems early, increase the chances of successful treatment while slowing the progression of the disease and making sure they have a good quality of life. We may also recommend more in-depth testing based on your senior pet’s health history and age, including:

  • Blood work and urinalysis
  • Chest X-rays or heart ultrasound
  • EKG
  • Blood pressure monitoring
  • Eye pressure testing
If your senior pet has a chronic disease, such as arthritis, endocrine disorder, or cancer, we’ll teach you to accommodate your pet’s needs, control pain, and regularly assess quality of life. We’re dedicated to your pet from birth to the final goodbye, and we’ll stand beside you every step of the way.
